Dinah, ClinkShrink, & Roy produce Shrink Rap: a blog by Psychiatrists for Psychiatrists, interested bystanders are also welcome. A place to talk; no one has to listen.
Same to you! Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Happy New Year!
I sometimes wonder if there's a difference (perceived or actual) in taking a pill to "fix" something (ex any biologically based psychiatric illness - and this is in no way meant to start a debate on if psychiatric illness is biologically based) as opposed to "enhance" something that fundamentally works just fine. And where is that line - someone afraid of flying but does not have any other sort of anxiety who takes a mild sedative before a flight: is he an example of a "fix" or an "enhancement?"The irony, of course, is that I personally don't have much of an issue with the idea of medication that would enhance mind performance (and I love the example of coffee as a very accurate parallel!) but have a hard time - and expect to continue to have a hard time to some degree or another for many, many more years, if not the rest of my life - with the idea of taking lithium for bipolar disorder - which falls pretty clearly into the "fix" category. sigh.
