For ClinkShrink -- and all the Introverts I Know and Love

Our society values the qualities that go with extroversion.  You're supposed to be social, to get out, to collaborate, to gain energy from social events, and if you don't, damn it, well you're an introvert, or shy, or avoidant, or socially phobic.  "I wish Johnny got out more."  "I wish granny would go to the senior center."  We grow up believing that boys shouldn't wear dresses, that it's your fault if you're fat, and that it's of the utmost importance be outgoing.  Now introverts often do play well with others (Clink, in fact, plays very well, but don't ever try to get her to go out with you after she's in her pj's).  So I know several people who have gained some comfort from the book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking" (that would be me, except of course on our podcasts where Clink just won't shut up).  So ClinkShrink enjoyed Susan Cain's book and even wrote a review of it HERE I found this TED talk by Susan Cain -- it's cute, funny, and insightful, so I thought I would share it. If you have other TED talks you've enjoyed, please do give me the links.  They don't need to be about psychiatry, but I enjoy funny and thought-provoking.  Thanks to Laszlo, I found this on his facebook feed.

The TED talk that always gives me a laugh ( not psych related) is Jennifer 8. Lee hunts for General Tso's chicken.

"but don't ever try to get her to go out with you after she's in her pj's"

In my experience, introverts are usually really good for sleep overs.Show up at Clink's in your PJs, stay up all night, watch old movies, and bake cookies together. She doesn't have to go out and you two can still hang.

I don't know what a TED talk is, other than obviously a talk by somebody on something or other.

At least I didn't before I clicked through on the talk linked above.

I'd never heard of these before (maybe seen the TED thing somewhere, but had no clue what it meant). I think I must live under a rock, but being agoraphobic that is kind of what I do.

Although being a hermit leads to much internet time, so maybe I'm under an internet rock, too.

My favorite one is by Terry Walhs, MD, Minding your Mitochondria.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLjgBLwH3Wc

Those of you not familiar with her story, this about how she obtained significant improvement in her MS symptoms with a paleo type diet that included 9 cups of vegetables per day and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

She was in wheelchair and about two to three years later, she was out of one and doing bike rides.

Interestingly, she tired supplements and found they were not helpful.

What I found amusing is she said she learned very little about nutrition in medical school but said that Dr. Google had the answers she needed.

If anyone wants more information, here is her website:

The TED talks are always good. I heard Susan Cain's shortly after it came out. Rob beat me to the one about the femtocamera---very cool.
